A NORTH Wales judge was yesterday unveiled as the new Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd.

The Queen announced Judge Huw Daniel, 66, will take up the post on May 1, following the retirement of Professor Eric Sunderland.

The judge, well known on the Cheshire and North Wales crown court circuit was born in Bangor in 1939 and became a circuit judge in 1986.

He has also been a senior judge for the Sovereign Base Areas, Cyprus, since 2002.

From 1980 until 1998 he held several posts, including Recorder and Liaison Judge for North Wales.

He became a Deputy Lieutenant for Gwynedd in 1993.

Married to Phyllis, with a daughter, Antonia, Judge Daniel will continue as a Crown Court judge until the end of April.
