NEW and young drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 can take part in a course for motorists who have recently passed their test.

Organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Safe and Sustainable Travel Team, the course is funded by the Ellesmere Port Local Road Safety Delivery Group.

The Pass Plus Xtra training course includes a theory session specifically aimed at new drivers and a thought-provoking discussion where the focus of attention is the car.

At the end of the session participants will receive a voucher entitling them to complete Pass Plus at a discounted rate with one of a number of driver trainers who work alongside Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Safe and Sustainable Travel Team. Pass Plus must be completed by March 31, 2012, to receive the discount.

The next available theory session will be at Ellesmere Port Fire Station on Monday, February 6, between 6- 8.40pm.

Participants may be entitled to a discount on their car insurance, if they complete the course within 12 months of passing their driving test.

Cllr Lynn Riley, executive member for community and environment, said: “Evidence shows us that newly qualified drivers are more likely to have a crash in the first two years after passing their test

“This course is extremely valuable to inexperienced drivers as it helps them build their skills, awareness and road sense to help reduce the risk of being involved in a crash.”

Cllr Lynn Clare added: “The course covers theory and six on-road training modules. The on-road sessions cover driving in towns, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and driving on motorways.”
