FRAUDSTERS are being warned they’re more likely than ever before to be caught cheating the benefit system.
A fresh wave of investigations are underway to combat the rising numbers of people employed in the care industry who are fraudulently claiming housing and council tax benefits.
North Shropshire District Council is in the process of recovering £48,000 of tax payers’ money after bringing charges against benefit cheats in the past year.
The Benefits Service Fraud Investigation Team says it’s starting a new drive to focus activity on people working within the care industry.
A council spokesperson said: “This area of employment has proven to be particularly high risk as some benefit claimants fail to declare the income they receive from this work to the council.”
People are being urged to report suspected cases of benefit fraud, by calling the local fraud hotline on 01939 238441 or the national hotline on 0800 854 440.
