PUPILS of all ages are working together to set the streets of Neston alight with their own torch relay.

Fifty students from Neston High School have been nominated by classmates to carry a torch along a 15km route on Wednesday, May 23.

The relay will take in Parkgate, Woodfall, Bishop Wilson, St Winefride’s, Neston, and Willaston primary schools.

The torch will be handed over at each school, allowing youngsters to stage their own mini version of the Olympic Torch run.

Judy Gilmour, assistant headteacher at Neston High, said: “This is a wonderful example of learning outside the classroom. The school recently received a national award for this and we are committed to developing this aspect of learning within our community.”

Event co-ordinator Julie Harnden said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community and the excitement that this event is creating and we are very grateful to everyone for their support.”

Former Olympic gymnast and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Craig Heap will start the relay and drop in on each school to encourage pupils.

Torch-bearers will also be accompanied by a heritage bus carrying a media team which will record the event.
