PROBLEM-SOLVING youngsters scoop awards at a technology tournament in Neston.

Neston High School headteacher Steve Dool and Professor David Brigden, district co-ordinator for the Technology Tournament, welcomed 18 teams from schools and colleges to Neston High School for this year’s Technology Tournament staged by the Rotary Club of Neston on Friday.

Last autumn schools and colleges were invited to enter teams of four pupils in each of the following age categories: Foundation (Key Stage 3 – ages 11-14), Intermediate (Key Stage 4 – ages 15-16 and Advanced (Key Stage 5 – ages 16+).

This year the event attracted 18 entries (nine Foundation, six Intermediate and three Advanced).

The teams had to attempt to solve a problem based on engineering and scientific principles.

Their challenge this year was to help reduce pollution by designing, building and testing a prototype vehicle powered by a weight, which could climb a track rising from 50-150mm over a 1.5m length.

The judges assessed each team on the basis of their planning and teamwork, design analysis, design development, a portfolio and whether they have addressed the challenge and demonstrated they have solved the problem.

This is the fifth year Professor Brigden and Bob Muirhead of the Rotary Club of Neston have organised this event.

The judges were delighted with the enthusiasm of the teams and their attempts to solve the problem they were given.

Neston High School won in all three categories and the teams were presented with their prizes by Professor Brigden.
