NESTON High School is celebrating after being recognised at a national awards ceremony.

The school was runner-up in the ‘Best Learning Outside the Classroom’ category for secondary schools at the National Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Awards for Excellence and Innovation.

Sponsored by Learning Through Landscapes, the awards recognise the commitment of schools, youth organisations and educational establishments to providing inspiring, engaging and memorable learning experiences outside the classroom.

Neston High School underwent two rounds of judging over the course of five months to show how LOtC had been built into the curriculum and had had a positive impact on students.

The school was praised for the excellent use of its grounds, the local amenities and external providers, as well as for being inventive with its budgeting and fundraising and its work with the community, partners, governors and parents.

Award judges said: “It is their vision, commitment and tireless efforts to find new and creative ways to inspire their pupils that will ensure the next generation of young people will be brighter, happier young adults with greater aspirations and a better understanding of the world around them.”

Judges were particularly impressed by the school’s extra learning programme, international links and ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project.

Headteacher Steven Dool said: “It is a tribute to the many staff and partners who contribute to a huge programme of activities which takes learning beyond the classroom.

“At a time when many schools are reducing the number of foreign exchange programmes, trips and activities we are increasing the number.

“This award is just recognition of the value we place on broadening and extending the educational provision for students at Neston High School.”
