QUICK-THINKING neighbours rescued residents during a house fire on Avondale in the early hours of Friday (April 2).

The fire at the house had started at the front door and porch at about 2.20am. The occupants were unable to descend the stairs from the bedrooms due to the thick smoke and flames.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue officer said: "The occupants decided to climb out of an upstairs window on to a flat part of the roof and await rescue."

Neighbours who had been alerted to the blaze managed to put a ladder against the side of the house so the occupants could climb down and escape the fire.

Ellesmere Port fire crews arrived at the property to find the occupants away from the house, being comforted by neighbours.

They extinguished the blaze quickly and are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
