MARKS & Spencer’s vast “Marble Arch of the North” flagship store proposed at Cheshire Oaks is under fire.

Chester City Council’s planning board agreed to oppose the huge 195,000 sq ft store with both food and non food floorspace, a cafe, deli bar and restaurant after hearing that on M&S’s own figures, it would drain away £6m worth of shopping a year from the city centre.

The store would be close to The Coliseum leisure park.

Planning board chairman Cllr Andrew Storrar (Con, Saughall) moved that a council report on the development, with its recommended objection, should be approved.

This was agreed on an 11–2 vote.
