BOROUGH MP Andrew Miller has blasted Kwik Save for the ‘shambolic’ way in which its Ellesmere Port store was closed down.

Last week we exclusively revealed how the company had shut the Station Road store a day before its shock announcement that it was axing 79 branches across the country as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

The closure of the town centre store has resulted in the loss of about 20 jobs and left worried customers fearing for the future of other Kwik Save stores in Little Sutton and Neston.

Mr Miller said: ‘The whole thing is shambolic up and down the country. It’s a terrible example of business practice.

‘The staff deserve better. I will be keeping my ear close to the ground with regards to the future of the other Kwik Save stores.’

Retail union Usdaw says it will help workers find new jobs after being told by other retailers they would be interested in talking them on.

A spokesperson said: ‘Usdaw has developed an expertise in helping retail staff who have lost their jobs find other jobs in the retail sector as we know that our members don’t just want their redundancy package but a new job with some long-term job security.

‘The Co-op and Morrison’s have already indicated they are interested in talking to former Kwik Save staff who are often hugely experienced and have done a magnificent job in keeping their former stores open.

‘Usdaw is talking to other retailers who we hope will offer their support too.

‘And although there is no guarantee that everyone will find work we are committed to making sure every retailer knows there is a chance to take on experienced staff who will add real value to their business.’

Meanwhile, Asda were giving away free milk and bread on Sunday and Monday to customers of the closed Kwik Save store.

The supermarket gave shoppers a free Bag for Life, two pints of milk and a freshly baked loaf on production of a Kwik Save receipt or carrier bag.
