AN MP has questioned the activities of United Utilities in his summer adjournment address to Parliament.

Weaver Vale MP Mike Hall claimed United Utilities had gone back on promises not to change land drainage rates to people living in park homes at Promenade Park, Moore, and that those people now faced an increase of between 83%-183%.

He added that he wrote three times to the company before finally receiving a reply and that United Utilities had not provided him with figures he had asked for.

He also complained that UU had not responded to his query as to whether it would allow churches in Weaver Vale to be granted a 90% charitable discount.

He said rate changes would mean that churches would have less cash to spend on their communities and parishioners.

United Utilities told the Weekly News: “A few years ago we moved to a fixed charge for domestic customers who are fed off a bulk meter.

“Unfortunately this particular group of customers was overlooked at the time and were not moved, which is why we are now bringing these customers in line with other domestic “Churches have never been classed as a charity by water companies.

“Following advice from water industry regulator Ofwat, United Utilities is introducing a new way of charging non-household customers for surface water and highways drainage.

“The new way of charging will apply only to non-household premises such as businesses and public buildings, which have a water meter.”
