AN MP has asked the Welsh Language Board to step in and help extend the use of Welsh at Wrexham Football Club.

Ian Lucas MP has written to the board’s chief executive, Meirion Prys Jones, to suggest a meeting between board representatives and Wrexham’s new chief executive, Anthony Fairclough.

Lately the club has made efforts to try and use the language as part of its pre-match warm-up.

In his letter to Mr Jones, Mr Lucas said: “As the only football league club in North Wales, Wrexham is uniquely placed to play a role in communicating knowledge of the Welsh language to the wider football community and also in spreading use of the language in Wrexham and North Wales generally.”

The Labour MP has also offered to attend any meeting between the board and club if needed.

Mr Lucas said: “Mr Fairclough has recognised the vital role the club can play in engaging with Wrexham. It is to his credit that he wishes to use this to promote the Welsh language locally.

“I hope that the Welsh Language Board and Wrexham Football Club will be able to get together to discuss ways in which they will be able to promote Welsh in the region.”
