WREXHAM MP Ian Lucas has called for increased choice for his constituents in a House of Commons debate on digital television.

The debate was held in Westminster Hall at Mr Lucas's request. He called for it in a bid to highlight what he believes could be a major issue for TV viewers in North East Wales when the switchover to digital television occurs.

He highlighted his concerns that, with the switchover from the analogue system to digital due in 2009-10, Wrexham's television viewers may be short-changed - as many cannot currently receive Welsh stations.

And he called on ministers to take action to ensure viewers in North East Wales have the widest possible choice of stations.

He said: 'As a viewer I know it is difficult for people in Wrexham to receive digital services from Wales via Freeview.

'Most signals come from the Winter Hill transmitter in North West England. Thus, there is no BBC Wales, no HTV Wales and no S4C for people who receive these.

'Wrexham is North East Wales's largest town and a lot of people will want Welsh programmes.

'I asked Ministers what steps they plan to take to ensure my constituents will receive the widest possible choice.'
