Aberystwyth Town 0 Welshpool Town 0

DESPITE having seen off champions elect TNS four days previously, Welshpool Town counted the cost of recent defeats to Caernarfon and Port Talbot after failing to take maximum spoils at Park Avenue saw their European chances fade.

Manager Tomi Morgan would normally consider a point at his former club a fair return. However, with Llanelli’s trouncing of relegation favourites Cwmbran, he accepted third place and an Intertoto Cup spot were now very unlikely.

Aberystwyth’s final match of the season counted for very little as far as they were concerned, but there was no sign of lethargy or staleness as they responded to manager Brian Coyne’s call to keep going until the finish.

However, despite plenty of effort and promise on a difficult bone hard surface, it proved a defence dominated affair. Aneurin Thomas and Christian Edwards cancelled out most of what Welshpool threw at them, and Brett Jefferies and Geraint Windsor were equally resilient at the other end.

George Hughes rattled the Aber bar in the first half, and Stuart Roberts had a second half strike at the other end ruled out for offside, but goalkeepers, Richard Morgan and Gerard McGuigan remained largely untroubled.

Even without Europe Tomi Morgan can be consoled by leading previously unfashionable Welshpool to their best ever finish.
