WREXHAM once again showed why not many teams will fancy coming to the Racecourse this season with another handsome victory on Saturday - but boss Denis Smith remained less than impressed after the game (writes PAUL WHEELOCK).

A brace from Dean Walters and first goals for the club from Dean Bennett and Simon Spender maintained the Reds' fine home record which, along with Rochdale, is the best in League Two.

Yet the Dragons' chief was dismayed at the nature of the goals they conceded - the first a blooper from goalkeeper Michael Ingham and the second as a result of slack marking.

Smith, who saw defenders Andy Holt and Paul Warhurst limp off with injuries, said: 'It would have been a better game if we had won 4-0. But to give two goals away as we have done does not make me happy at all.

'The first was farcical and the second one came from someone not marking someone they should have. So I lost my rag a bit, which is unusual for me.'

Smith made changes to the side that brushed aside Stockport County two weeks earlier, with Ingham returning in favour of rookie Michael Jones and reigning Player of the Year Holt slotting in on the left-side of the back three.

But it was the man who's been so impressive this term, Mark Jones, who had the afternoon's first shot as he took a Bennett pass in his stride before firing over.

That represented the best chance of a quiet opening period. But all that changed on 18 minutes when the hosts took the lead.

Left wing-back Alex Smith found the overlapping Andy Holt, who took the ball inside and fired a vicious cross for Walters to touch in.

The goal brought Torquay out of their shell and Jo Kuffour's drive from distance went inches over the bar.

Ingham then had to be at full stretch to deny Matt Hewlett at his near post and, from the resulting corner, Kevin Hill came even closer to bringing the Gulls level.

It was all Torquay now and Ingham was forced into another flying stop from Kuffour. But when the ball was cleared Wrexham hit their visitors with a classic counter-attack goal.

Jones, picking up the ball in the centre of the field, had Walters darting to his right and Bennett to his left. The playmaker patiently waited before playing the perfect pass to Bennett, who fired a left-footed drive under the body of ex-Wrexham favourite Andy Marriott.

And unlucky Torquay had further reason to grumble four minutes after the restart when they found themselves 3-0 down.

Walters saw his curling effort parried by the former Dragons' keeper into the path of Spender, who hammered home his first senior strike.

Torquay continued to push men forward and they deservedly pulled one back in the 66th-minute - but in the most bizarre of circumstances.

Ingham, who had dived bravely to collect the ball from Kuffour, threw it out of his hands only to see the same player sneak in behind him to give leading marksmen Alan Connell the simplest of tap-ins.

But any fears of a comeback were allayed 12 minutes from time, when Walters notched his second of the game as he calmly slotted home from six yards out.

But the last action belonged to United, as Tony Bedeau was given far too much space to head in Darren Garner's free-kick.
