THIS year’s Starlight walk was hailed a huge success.

The wind and rain failed to dampen the spirits of the 475 ladies taking part to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

At midnight, the pink procession made its way along the new six-mile route from the Northgate arena and through Hoole to the Boathouse on the River Dee for a refreshment stop before returning to the arena to receive a medal and a well-earned rest.

Among those taking part were staff from McColl’s, who raised a whopping £1,070.27.

Tina Beaumont of the Great Sutton branch said: “We had a great time, and raised lots of money for a very worthy cause, which is fantastic.”

A spokesman for the Backford hospice said: “We are delighted that £31,000 has been pledged by the female walkers.

“Anyone who missed out on the midnight walk still has a chance to take part in the second Starlight Walk on September 3 from the former Stanney High School in Ellesmere Port. On the night, the lucky winner of a walk-on part on ITVs Coronation Street will be announced.”
