THE Merseyrail traditional £1 ‘Christmas Cracker’ rail ticket hasbeen withdrawn this year.
The promotion run on Merseyside’s trains every Thursday in the run-up to the big day gave train travellers budget £1 return tickets.
The deal on Merseyrail’s Northern and Wirral lines had proved extremely popular since its introduction more than 15 years ago.
The £1 return flat fare extended from Ellesmere Port to stations as far as Southport, Ormskirk, Kirkby, West Kirby, New Brighton, Chester and Liverpool city centre.
Merseyrail chiefs said a 50% increase in the number of regular users meant that if the promotion ran, it would lead to overcrowding on trains and stations.
The rail operator also said with Liverpool One stores staying open until 8pm on weekdays, the late-night Thursday deal could no longer be justified.
Instead, Merseyrail said it would be running special cheap ticket promotional offers throughout the year, such as bank holiday weekends and other dates yet to be announced.
