SUFFERERS of mental illness throughout Halton are being treated like subnormal people according to one former psychiatric patient.
Geoff Houghton from Runcorn believes that mental illness is actually on the increase in Halton, despite the proposed cuts to the funding of two Mind day centres in the borough.
The members’ secretary for the Runcorn centre describes the plans as devastating and claims that further cuts in services will make it impossible for mentally ill residents to receive help.
The Weekly News revealed last week that outraged Mind carers were to fight the borough council’s decision to cut its funding of the service by £50,000.
Mr Houghton said: “It devastates me to learn of the further erosion of mental health services in Halton and I now think that the whole structure is in a state of collapse.”
He added that if cuts in the borough council’s funding went ahead it would “complete the downward spiral in mental health services in the borough”.
