CARL LAMB fired a first-half hat-trick as The New Saints moved to within touching distance of the Welsh Premier crown while pushing Cwmbran closer to relegation.

Victory leaves the league leaders needing just four points from as many games, and they could feasibly seal their fourth league title if they defeat Caernarfon on Saturday and other results go their way.

Despite the scoreline, struggling Cwmbran had their moments in the first half and went close early on when Daynar Thorpe fired wide.

But the Saints took charge with two goals in three minutes, with Lamb notching his first on 17 minutes when netting from close range after Scott Ruscoe's cross from the right had been flicked on.

Another Ruscoe ball into the box sparked confusion moments later and Lamb capitalised with his second of the game at the second attempt.

Cwmbran continued to look lively as they hit the post but there was no way back once Lamb had completed his hat-trick on 35 minutes, when a right-wing cross from Duane Courtney eluded the defence and the striker netted.

After Cwmbran had Gareth Mouncher sent off, the Saints tightened their grip in the second period, with Lamb breaking towards the keeper before crossing for John Leah to notch the fourth.

And the rout was completed when a perfect pass from midfielder Barry Hogan released sub Mike Wilde who held off the defence before firing home.

The Saints look unstoppable as they moved closer to the title after stretching to 18 games their unbeaten run which helped to earn manager Ken McKenna the manager of the month award for March.
