PLAS Madoc Leisure Centre is to become more than just a place to keep fit - it will also be a work of art!

Wrexham Mayor Aled Roberts will unveil a huge mural on the front of the building this Saturday, which has been designed by children from Rhosymedre Junior School, local residents and a professional artist.

The project began five years ago when community leaders agreed the Leisure Centre needed a facelift. After a series of consultations, the Plas Madoc Community Association secured funding for a mural.

Professional artists held workshops in Rhosymedre Junior School and the Youth Club to inspire ideas, and a public exhibition of four designs by national artists was organised. Professional artist, Louise Shenstone was commissioned to take the project forward using consultation generated ideas.

Thanks to funding from Wrexham Council, the Arts Council for Wales, Shanks First, and the National Assembly, the project has united the community with sport and art as well as improving the appearance of the centre.

Alan Watkin, chief leisure, libraries and culture officer said: 'This project is a great example of partnership working. I would like to thank everyone involved in the project and I look forward to seeing the finished artwork.'
