A 20-YEAR-OLD from Northwich has been on parade at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall to celebrate the successful completion of his basic training as he embarks on a career in the Royal Navy.

Trainee communication and information systems specialist Mathew Clement joined the Royal Navy in April.

Over the past nine weeks, he has been put through an intensive training programme.

The course is designed to transform civilians into sailors and includes a range of physical and mental challenges.

The former pupil of Rudheath High School said: “I found the training difficult but very rewarding.”

Charity bike ride

STUDENTS at Rudheath High School are preparing to get on their bikes to help Northwich charity The Joshua Tree build a holiday house and support centre for children with a life-threatening illness.

The sponsored bike ride has been organised by Year 9 students Adam Latham and Ryan Stewart and takes place after school on Thursday at The Ashton and Neuman’s flashes. Each lap is 1.7 miles long and students will try to do as many laps as possible between 4pm and 6pm.
