A YOUNG Ellesmere Port man has successfully completed a gruelling training programme to become a Royal Marine Commando.

Dean Jones, 18, spent 32 weeks at a base in Exeter, where he had to pass four exhausting tests.

The former Whitby High School pupil had to complete an endurance course covering four miles and an assault course in 13 minutes, while carrying 31lbs of fighting equipment during both tests.

He also had to pass the nine-mile speed march, while carrying equipment and a rifle, within 90 minutes and finally the 30-mile march across Dartmoor in eight hours.

Dean will be based in Taunton, Somerset.
