A YOUTH football club in Wrexham has scooped an award from the Welsh Football Trust.

Marford and Gresford Albion Youth Football Club from Gresford won Club of the Year in a ceremony at Cardiff’s Hilton Hotel to recognise the trust’s greatest achievers.

It was presented by former footballer Ian Rush, the McDonald’s head of Welsh football.

The club, which caters for 300 players including two girls teams for the under- seven to under-16 age groups, was recognised for its aim to provide a friendly environment where young aspiring footballers can learn and develop their skills to the highest possible level.

Former players gone on to play in the Welsh Premier League and professional sides, including Dave Jones, who enjoyed success at Manchester United, Derby County and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Steve Harris, chairman of Marford and Gresford Albion, said: “It feels absolutely amazing to win.

“The club is in its 33rd year and is still doing a fantastic job in youth football. This recognition makes all the hard work put in by everyone, week in, week out, worthwhile and will give a fantastic boost to everyone involved.”
