WREXHAM manager Dean Saunders last night admitted his heart was in his mouth when an injury to Marc Williams sparked fears of a second metatarsal break for the Wales U-21 striker.

Williams lasted only eight minutes of the Racecourse friendly with Preston and his reaction – throwing down his right boot in anger before walking down the tunnel – suggested the worst.

After the 1-1 draw Saunders confirmed an x-ray had revealed nothing worse than severe bruising.

“I feared the worst and I could not think of anything else for the whole of the first half,” he said.

“I thought he had broken his foot again which would have left us a striker short, but thankfully it’s only a bruise.”

The Dragons boss said he was delighted with his team’s performance against the Championship side.

“We played really well and knocked the ball round, particularly in the first half,” he added.

“Preston are four divisions above us so my lads deserve a bit of credit.”
