A LANGOLLEN man suffered minor burns after trying to put out a fire in his attic in the early hours of Friday morning.

The fire started after tea light candles were left unattended in the house on Church Street.

By the time fire crews from Llangollen and Chirk had arrived, the blaze had been put out. There was damage to the carpet and floorboards.

The man, who didn't have a smoke alarm, had minor burns to his forearms but refused medical treatment.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service press officer Bethan Davies said: 'This shows the importance of having a smoke alarm fitted, as they give an early warning to when a fire has started.

'We advise you test your smoke alarm once a week and change the batteries at least once a year.

'If you do not have a smoke alarm, the Fire Service will fit you one free of charge if you call 0808 100 2863 and leave your name and number.'
