PETER NICHOLAS will give himself 14 days to find a way of beating Ventspils after Llanelli were drawn against the Latvians in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.

While the Champions League is a new experience for Llanelli it is anything but for the Welsh Premier League, with Ventspils very familiar opposition.

And Llanelli boss Nicholas’ first stop will be a chat with former TNS manager Ken McKenna following the Latvians’ away goals win over the Saints 12 months ago.

“We have two weeks to prepare, which is not ideal, so I need to get as much information as possible,” said Nicholas. “I need to give Ken a ring and get the work underway.”

With a second-round meeting against Brann Bergen on offer for the winners, Nicholas is hoping home advantage in the first leg on July 16 will aid his side. The second leg will be on July 22 or 23.

“It is handy because too often in the past Welsh clubs have effectively been beaten before the second leg,” added the Llanelli manager.
