The former Swansea player scored the vital goal after 11 minutes when he nipped in unmarked at the far post following a long throw and converted from close range at Stebonheath Park.

Both sides had opportunities to score in an open, physical game and the hosts had to clear off the line on a couple of occasions.

The Latvian visitors pressed towards the end and appeared poised to equalise late on when they engineered a neat opening, but the home defence produced a vital late block and the ball was cleared.

A header was also cleared off the line in the second minute of injury time following a corner as the hosts held on.

Goalscorer Jones admitted he was not in any way prolific, saying: “If that is the only one for the season it’s not bad going being the Champions League.

“We found it hard but the lads dug in really well.

“Coming in we’d have taken a 0-0 but 1-0 is a magnificent result for us.”
