WREXHAM manager Brian Little is stepping up his chase for a potential seventh signing of the summer as his 25-strong squad begin to look forward to their opening pre-season friendly against Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Dragons boss has made no secret of his desire to add to his midfield options after losing experienced campaigner Paul Carden to Cambridge United, but could also be looking to further strengthen his attacking line-up before the Blue Square Premier campaign gets underway next month.

“We are still very much working on one or two things and there is a possibility of something concrete before Saturday,” said Little yesterday. “On the other hand it might take a week or two to sort out everything to our satisfaction.”

The Racecourse boss, who has decided not to seek a replacement for fitness coach Andy O’Boyle following his departure to Coventry City last week, is planning to give as many as 22 players some match-time against Wolves at the Racecourse.

The game will provide a first opportunity for Wrexham fans to see Little’s new recruits in action and striker Jefferson Louis is keeping his fingers crossed for a place in the starting line-up.

The former Mansfield Town man said: “We’ve had a hard few days of running, which is always part of any pre-season, but now we are beginning to see a lot more of the ball and working on things on the pitch in terms of shape and formations.

“We need to get to know one another’s game and I’m really enjoying every minute of it. And hopefully I’ll be involved in Saturday’s friendly with Wolves.

“It’s been going really well, the training has been very enjoyable and everyone is beginning to get to know each other a lot better.

“I obviously know a couple of the lads already because I played with Simon Brown at Mansfield last season and I was at Weymouth with Kyle Critchell, so that has helped me to settle in pretty quickly.

“But it’s a new start for me here in Wales and I’m just hoping we can get off to a good start when the season gets under way.

“There is a good bunch of lads here and if we can build a good team spirit that will be very important.”

Louis, 29, who looks likely to start the season as a target man, promised the club’s fans he would never give less than his best.

“I’ll take it one game at a time and see how it goes,” he added. “I don’t set targets as such because I just want to get the best out of myself every time I play.

“This is a fresh opportunity for me and, like anyone, I’m optimistic about what lies ahead, but there is no pressure to deliver.

“The manager has brought me in to do a job for the team and providing I do my best no-one can ask for any more.”
