A LITTLE SUTTON mum will run the Virgin London Marathon next year to raise funds for the charity that helped to save her baby’s life.

In 2008, Emma Bowden, of Black Lion Lane, Little Sutton, was only 26 weeks into her pregnancy with daughter Isobel when she was admitted to hospital after doctors found that the umbilical cord wasn’t functioning properly.

She had developed a condition called reverse dopla which meant the cord wasn’t supplying Isobel with all the nutrients she should be getting, resulting in her showing signs of restricted growth.

Thanks to specialist staff from the Bliss charity at Arrowe Park Hospital who gave Emma the vital medical support and attention she needed, including steroid treatment to help the baby’s lungs grow, Isobel was born at 29 weeks weighing just 865 grams.

Four years later the toddler is now a picture of health and all set to start at Sutton Green Primary School later this month, and as a token of her gratitude Emma has decided to run the Virgin London Marathon next April to raise funds for Bliss.

“This is my way of bringing some much-needed support to such a dedicated charity,” said Emma, 37.

“I was monitored on a regular basis daily and put on drips for urgent medical assistance because I later learned Isobel and I were both in danger.

“But Bliss gave me a constant supply of information with books and detailed information about treatment to ensure that I understood and was prepared.

“When I was moved to the neo-natal department I was given what I can only describe as the most incredible treatment.

“Bliss are dedicated to finding results to ensure that there is a reduced amount of babies being born too soon, too sick, so I have a target of £2,500 set by them.”

She added: “I’ve already started training for the marathon, running 3 times a week at the gym and on my lunch where possible and will join a running club to prepare myself for the 26-miles.

“My aim is to bring awareness and much needed funds to ensure that they can continue to support other families.”
