A COUPLE from Little Sutton have made history by being the first bride and groom to get married at one of the most romantic settings in the world.

Natalie and Ian O’Neill ensured their special day was one to remember forever when they tied the knot at the childhood home of romantic poet William Wordsworth in Cockermouth, Cumbria – the first ever National Trust property in the county to be able to host wedding and civil ceremonies.

After the licence came through earlier this month, newly-weds tying the knot at Wordsworth House can choose to make their vows in either the dining room, drawing room or even the kitchen once used by Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy.

Wedding receptions are then held at next door’s adjoining Trout Hotel.

Natalie, 27, whose parents both work at the house, said her big day was ‘perfect’.

“We already have a family connection to the house with my mum and dad both working there and when I discovered we could be the first people ever to marry there it made it even more special,” she said.

“Of course the logistics were my biggest concern – getting married away from home and getting everyone there from around the country, but it all came together brilliantly.

“The ceremony was really intimate and the gardens looked beautiful, and the fact we got married on a Friday, when the house is closed, meant we had it to ourselves so there were no other people running around.

“It was so special.”

Sue Eccles, managing director of The Trout Hotel, said: “It was a real honour for us to host the wedding breakfast of the first couple to tie the knot at Wordsworth House.

“Our staff really enjoyed playing a part in not only a special day for Natalie and Ian, but a marriage milestone for Cumbria with Wordsworth House being the first National Trust property in the county to be licensed for civil ceremonies.”
