WREXHAM owners Neville Dickens and Geoff Moss have given their full backing for manager Brian Little to strengthen his squad when the transfer window re-opens next month.

And they are confident the experienced Dragons boss has what it takes to drag the club away from the foot of the League Two table during the second half of what has so far been a disappointing campaign.

Moss said it was thanks to Wrexham’s youth development programme that cash was still readily available, even though Little currently has 30 players on the books – including loan signings Robbie Garrett and Sam Aiston.

But the Racecourse outfit remains well within the Football League’s salary cap because only a percentage of the wages paid to players under 23 and brought through the ranks counts against the allowed 60% of total turnover.

The club has a dozen members of the squad in that category and Moss said: “We had a chat with Brian after Saturday’s game and told him that we are well within the cap at the moment.

“He said he would give the matter some thought and take it from there, but I guess he would be interested in bringing people in on loan because, even though there is money in the budget, we don’t have the cash available to splash out on substantial transfer fees.

“We will do everything we can to help Brian and to try and ensure that we begin to climb the league table, but the job has to be achieved within sensible margins.”

Wrexham, who face Rotherham United at Millmoor on Saturday, have won one and drawn two of the five matches since Little took over from Brian Carey last month.

But Moss added: “Brian is a very experienced manager and he seems to know what he is doing.

“We have to respect that and trust him to do what is right for Wrexham, and that is exactly what we intend to do.”

Currently on loan from Northampton Town, midfield man Aiston is set to sign a Racecourse contract from the turn of the year and another potential target could be former Peterborough and Chester City defender Phil Bolland.

Bolland has been training with the Dragons for a fortnight and played in a full-scale practice match yesterday against Everton reserves, which Wrexham won 3-0 thanks to two goals from Michael Proctor and a third from Neil Roberts.

Little said: “Phil has been told by Chester that he can train with us and it gives me an opportunity to see how he fits in with potential team-mates both on and off the pitch.

“It’s something I like to do and I have a number of other players lined up to come and train with us in January.

“It’s very important that they mix in and work well together so that if and when we do sign people we have limited the risk factor as much as possible.”

On yesterday’s game, the Racecourse boss added: “A good result is always important, but it’s not the be-all and end-all in these situations.

“The bigger benefit is watching your players training against people they don’t know and see every day, and we want to test our players as often as we can.”
