LEX XI caused the shock of the Welsh Cup third round on Saturday as they defeated Welsh Premier League Porthmadog to book a place in the last 16.

Second-half strikes from Paul Griffiths and Aaron Edwards swept the Cymru Alliance outfit to a memorable 2-0 home win.

NEWI Cefn Druids are also through after they won 1-0 at home to top-flight counterparts Newtown through Joe Feeney’s 61st-minute penalty.

Cymru Alliance strugglers Gresford Athletic are out, though, after they went down 3-2 at home to Prestatyn Athletic.

Dan Hughes and Owen Roberts twice equalised for Gresford to force extra-time, with the Welsh Premier League visitors winning it just a minute shy of penalties.

Druids face the short trip to Welsh Premier League neighbours Airbus UK Broughton in the fourth round, but Lex will make the much longer journey to Bridgend Town of the Welsh League Division One.

Druids suffered heartbreak on Tuesday as they crashed out of the Loosemores Challenge Cup quarter-finals 2-0 at home to The New Saints.

Druids return to league action at home to Aberystwyth Town on Saturday (2.30pm).

Gresford are at home to Penrhyncoch while Lex head to Denbigh Town (both 2pm).

There are then away games for Lex at Flint Town United on Tuesday and Gresford at Mold Alexandra on Wednesday (both 7.30pm).
