LEAGUE secretary John Deakin is to press S4C for more English-language television coverage of the Welsh Premier.

A new TV deal was announced last week which will see highlights from the league continue to be screened on S4C’s Y Clwb Pel Droed programme into the 2008-9 season.

But with no subtitles as yet on the programme, and with many Welsh Premier clubs attracting large followings from outside Welsh-language heartlands, Deakin wants S4C to make more provision for non-Welsh speakers.

“I’m somewhat keen to ensure that there’s more English-language exposure than there has been,” explained Deakin.

“I need to talk to the broadcaster regarding that, given that for the great majority of people in Wales their first language is English.

“I think the Clwb Pel Droed programme has been very positive for the league, even for non-Welsh speakers.

“An awful lot of them tune in. But for features I see no reason why they couldn’t make some provision for non-Welsh speakers, perhaps in the form of subtitles.”

Deakin added: “I’m obviously concerned that non-Welsh speakers are catered for and I need to clarify certain situations.”
