NEWI Cefn Druids kicked off the Welsh Premier League campaign with a thrilling 3-3 home draw with Welshpool in front of a bumper 308 Plaskynaston Lane crowd on Friday night.

Druids, leading through new boys Joe Feeney and Nicky Ward and a long-range screamer from the ever reliable Geraint Lewis, were pegged back deep into injury-tine by Ross Stephens’ second goal of the match.

That was harsh on the hosts who also handed debuts to youngsters Lee T Jones, Mark Stewart and Chris Marriott – the latter who has signed on loan from Wrexham with Jones and Stewart arriving permanently from the Racecourse – while cultured midfielder Matthew Cook made his first start in nearly two years following a serious leg injury.

Druids are back on home turf tomorrow night for the visit of former champions The New Saints (7.30pm).

New-look Lex XI made the perfect start to the Cymru Alliance on Saturday as they romped to a 5-0 home victory over Holyhead.

Keiron Jones hit a hat-trick while Mike Halley and Nathan Evans were also on target for Lex, who host Llandudno on Saturday (2.30pm) before making their way to neighbours Gresford Athletic on Tuesday (6.30pm).

Gresford, who were not in action at the weekend, are away to Llangefni on Saturday (2.30pm).
