NORTH Wales Fire and Rescue staff will now all be required to learn basic Welsh as part of a new linguistic skills strategy.

The service, in conjunction with Coleg Llysfasi and with advice from North Wales Police, has designed and recorded two new CDs to guide Welsh learners through the process of learning basic greetings and pronunciations, and everyone in the service will now be required to take part in an oral test in Welsh.

Simon Smith, chief fire officer, said: “We, as a service, feel it is important to offer our residents the option of communicating in their mother tongue.”
