A WIRRAL landfill site could soon be transformed into a popular beauty spot.

The site at Bromborough Dock has caused controversy since it opened 25 years ago, with residents complaining of problems with flies and smells.

It is due to close in 2006 and plans are now underway to turn it into a landscaped park which it is hoped will attract hundreds of visitors.

Biffa, which runs the site, will meet community representatives and planners this week to discuss proposals for the 36 hectare site

They are working with Wirral Groundwork Trust who will help them restore and develop the area.

Conservationist Ken Pulham from Bromborough Pool Village said: "I have fought against this tip since the decision to open it in 1979. I am delighted it is to close and am looking forward to having a park that can be enjoyed by everyone.

"But we have to make sure it is done right. This site looks right over to Liverpool and could be beautiful - a real asset for Wirral bringing the visitors in. I hope to see the whole community involved so by the end of it we have something everybody wants."

Bromborough Lib Dem councillor, Alan Jones, said: "Everyone is hoping we get the park that Biffa has been promising us. It would be a wonderful asset to this area.

"Over the last 25 years Bromborough residents have had a lot to put up with. There have been problems with flies and smells from the site. The park development is something they have been waiting for."

Lib Dem councillor Steve Niblock said: "This area would provide a fantastic facility for birdwatchers and a place for people to spend the day.

"It would be a prime site for people to look at boats on the Mersey and also get a great view of Liverpool.

"The park would have Port Sunlight on its doorstep and would make up an attractive part of the heritage walk."

A spokeswoman for Biffa said the company was still liaising with community representatives to determine the exact use for the site once it closes.

She said: "It will be a large public space. But things are very much in their initial stages and no definite plans have been made.

"We have appointed a consultant and will be working with Wirral Groundwork who will also consult local residents."
