WIRRAL Council is hoping to make thousands of pounds extra income each year by advertising on some of its 37,000 lamp-posts.

The scheme, run by a private company, would see lamp-posts across parts of the borough used for illuminated adverts for local and national companies.

The scheme, which it is estimated could bring in £1,000 per year per lamp-post, is aimed initially at 11 wards across the borough.

The council is working on the plans with Enterprise which has already signed a contract with the authority for advertising on Wirral's roundabouts. Seventy-seven signs at 34 sites across the borough will bring in £57,000 during the first nine months of the scheme.

Now the private company could be asked to supply and install new lamp-posts if councillors approve the proposal.

The new lamp-posts, which are specially adapted to take sponsors' adverts,, will each need planning consent.

In a report to the Environment and Transportation Select Committee, technical services director David Green said: "Once erected, all responsibility for attracting advertisers for the columns and all subsequent maintenance will fall with our partner."

Final approval for adverts displayed on the lamp-posts would rest with him.

Jonathan Mackie, of Enterprise, which is installing the lamp-posts said all the lamp-posts would be in commercial areas, and not in residential areas of Wirral.
