A FAMILY recipe passed down from her Indian grandmother helped Northwich schoolgirl Laila Milne beat off the competition in the local heat of a national contest for young chefs.
Laila, aged 12, will now do culinary battle in the regional finals of the Future Chef competition, to be held in Trafford in January.
A Year 8 pupil at The Grange School, Hartford, Laila has enjoyed cooking for as long as she can remember and often cooks for her parents and 10-year-old sister, Sophie. Her winning dishes were Damanian chicken with rice and avocado salad, with a dessert of chocolate and orange soufflé with raspberries.
“I did practice quite a lot for the competition but it wasn’t hard work because I really like cooking,” said Laila.
“I bought some of the ingredients from an Indian market in Rusholme, some from a supermarket, and I grew the chillies for the chicken dish myself.”
