JOHN Joyce has been appointed leader of Warrington Borough Council.

The appointment follows the resignation of former council leader, Cllr Mike Hughes.

Cllr Joyce, formerly deputy leader of the council during Cllr Hughes' 18-month leadership, was given support to take up the post at a meeting of the council, at which Cllr Paul Ross was appointed as deputy leader.

Cllr Joyce and Cllr Ross received the unanimous backing of the ruling Labour Party members.

The Liberal Democrat and Conservative members abstained from the vote.

Cllr Joyce said: "Every single member of our council is committed to doing our level best to improve Warrington for the benefit of our people.

"They are what counts and it is with great pleasure that I take on the role of leader of the council.

"I am looking forward to working alongside all members to ensure that Warrington continues to grow and develop and that the community priorities we all set are met and enhanced to the benefit of all.

"I'm delighted to be working alongside such an experienced member as Paul Ross.

"I'm sure we can form a very strong partnership."
