STAR midfielder Carlos Edwards could miss all of next season after injuring his knee on international duty.
Specialists believe the Wrexham winger has damaged the cruciate and medial ligaments and cartilage in his left knee playing for Trinidad and Tobago.
If they are right, Edwards, who has been selected in his division's team of the year for two years running, will be out for at least six months.
'This is a real problem for us,' said a club spokesman. 'This blow means that Denis Smith will have to re-think his planned transfers.'
Wrexham have begun correspondence with the FA of Trinidad and Tobago over compensation.
The spokesman said: 'Carlos has told us he wasn't tackled. He was playing on a bad pitch.'
