CHESTER'S fourth annual food and drink festival started yesterday with a cheese rolling contest.
For the first year, a team of Stilton rollers took on the traditional challengers of Cheshire and Lancashire cheeses in the competition to roll cheese down Bridge Street in the city centre and back again.
The local team got off to a flying start which the Lancashire and Stilton teams never quite managing to catch up, despite gaining some crucial yards in the third leg.
The Made in Cheshire team was captained by Hugo Bourne, who is the 14th generation of the Bourne family - renowned for making Cheshire Cheese since 1750.
Joining him was Neal Bates from Brasserie 10/16 representing Chester restaurants, Cath Edwards from Cheese Shop on Northgate Street and Philip Walker from Ravens Oak, cheese makers in Nantwich.
There was also a launch party at the Pastarazzi Restaurant for the festival, which runs from Saturday to April 3 and is backed by the North West Development Agency and Cheshire & Warrington Tourism Board.
