Winsford United 1 Atherton Colls 0
MAN of the match Michael Langley played a blinder to earn all three points for Winsford against a dangerous Atherton Collieries side.
He was presented with new gloves before the game for winning November’s goalkeeper of the month and they must have been good quality as he made a series of outstanding saves.
After a midfield battle, Winsford showed how dangerous they can be by scoring with their first chance. John Bluck’s 20th minute free kick floated into the box and David Barnes rose above everyone to make contact. The looping ball looked to be going wide and left goalkeeper Gavin Bates motionless, but it dropped just inside the post for the game’s only goal.
Former Blues player Leon Warmington threatened the Winsford goal but headed a corner inches wide. On 38 minutes, Darren Connell and Lee Madin linked well down the left and Madin was unlucky to see his effort hit the outside of the post.
Atherton came out fighting after the break and after two minutes Nathan Gabriel’s free kick was tipped over the bar by Langley. Andy Walker, Neil Davies and Danny Shannon all then tested the keeper but he proved equal to all that was thrown at him. The useful three points push the Blues into the top six.
