WREXHAM striker Jon Walters will defy medical advice to play against Macclesfield Town this evening.

Six weeks after fracturing a cheekbone during the FAW Premier Cup semi-final with TNS, the 22-year-old player yesterday declared himself available for the trip to Moss Rose and can expect to be rewarded with a place on the Dragons bench.

Manager Denis Smith welcomed Walters' attitude, but said he would listen carefully to the views of club physiotherapist Mel Pejic and Wrexham's doctors before naming his line-up.

"Jon thought he should have been involved for Saturday's game against Bury and he is adamant that's he's available tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see," Smith said.

"It's not like it was in the old days when players would come back even if they were not fully fit because times have changed and we have to be more careful in everything we do.

"But it says a lot about the lad that he's keen to get back and, even though he has not played for six weeks and obviously is short of match practice, his presence gives me an alternative up front."
