THE sound of jingle bells could be heard throughout the Port Arcades Shopping Centre as shoppers were given free jingle bell purse protectors.
The bells are designed to clip onto the zip of a purse or wallet and work as a warning signal in the event of any unexpected movement.
The initiative, jointly organised by the Port Arcades Shopping Centre and Ellesmere Port Against Business Crime Unit, was supported by Cheshire police, and saw 1,000 bells given away within an hour on Wednesday, November 22.
Joan Hawksey and Veronica Speakman, who had travelled from Aintree after hearing about the initiative on Radio Merseyside, explained that they had been trying to get hold of the bells for months and couldn’t find them in their local area.
Ani Budd from the Ellesmere Port Against Business Crime Unit said: “The Jingle Bells Campaign was a big hit with shoppers at The Port Arcades on Thursday.
“Hundreds of shoppers are now armed with this simple but effective deterrent when they hit the streets at this busy time of year.”
Due to the success of the event, the management team at the Port Arcades has ordered extra supplies of bells and there will now be a follow up event on Thursday, December 13.
