ATHLETICS: Greenbank-based James Griffiths, one of Vale Royal AC’s promising youngsters, won his first major track title at the weekend.

The former St Nicholas RC High School pupil, now a student at Loughborough University, won the North of England Indoor 1500m championship at Under 20s level in a time of 4mins 8secs at Sheffield. Clubmate James Stringer, the same age group, was fourth in the 800m final.

Meanwhile, Mid Cheshire had outright winners in Megan Huxley and Heather Timmins at Saturday’s Cheshire Schools Cross Country Championship.

They also won two team titles and some 22 runners, including 11 seniors, can expect call-ups by Cheshire for the Inter Counties event at Leicestershire on February 2.

County Vase tie

RUGBY UNION: Northwich have ben drawn against Wilmslow at home in the semi-final of the Cheshire Vase, one of three honours the club won last season. The tie is at Moss Farm on March 15.

Both Northwich and Winnington Park are at home on Saturday (2.15pm), against Sandbach and Leigh respectively – and both need points to stave off relegation.

The neighbours’ home games have clashed throughout the season and continue to do so until the finish, apart from the derby at Burrows Hill on March 29.

None of which is doing either club or rugby union any favours, says Northwich chairman Sam Naylor.

“There are people in Mid Cheshire who like to watch first team rugby and we offering them a double dose one week and nothing the next.

“Alternating our home games is something we should ask the league to arrange next season.”
