WREXHAM manager Denis Smith was left with little choice yesterday but to cancel training because of the severe snowy weather.

With several inches of snow covering the Colliers Park training complex and the difficulties for players posed by travelling from as far afield as Manchester and Merseyside, the Dragons boss cut his losses and told everyone to go to their nearest gym or fitness centre.

With six members of his squad away on international duty earlier in the week, yesterday's white-out was the last thing Smith needed ahead of tomorrow's League Two trip to Barnet, who picked up a useful point at Leyton Orient on Tuesday evening.

"It would not have made any sense to bring the lads in and I'm just hoping that we don't get any more snow in the coming 24 hours," he said..

"With players away during the week, we've not been able to do a lot and losing one day's preparation hasn't helped, but there isn't a great deal we can do about it.

"I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that there are no problems getting the lads in for training and then going down to London in the afternoon."

None of Wrexham's international contingent reported any injuries during their time away and there is a chance that captain Darren Ferguson could be available for the Underhill match, although he has not played for more than a month.

"Neither Mike Ingham nor Mark Jones was involved for the Northern Ireland or Wales games and we've not had any indication that they have picked up knocks," added the Racecourse boss.

"We had people watching Dennis Lawrence in action for Trinidad on Tuesday and he came through okay, as did the three lads who played for the Wales under-21 side at Llanelli."

Smith refused to be drawn on the possible reasons why midfielder Jones was not even named among the Wales substitutes for the friendly against Paraguay at the Millennium Stadium.

"I'm sure Mark's time will come and it's not my job to pick the Wales team," added Smith.

"I've got enough problems of my own here in putting out a team for the weekend."
