THE message was loud and clear from the Wrexham camp – "we’ve done nothing yet".

Even after the Dragons gave their hopes of avoiding the dreaded drop a huge boost with the midweek win at Shrewsbury Town, midfielder Danny Williams was adamant there was still more work ahead.

Wrexham’s 1-0 victory in their last ever meeting at Gay Meadow on Tuesday night saw the Dragons climb two places and move three points above the relegation zone with just two games remaining.

But the players know only too well they cannot afford to sit back and rest on their laurels.

"It was a great win and everyone knows that we needed it, and the fans needed it as well," said Williams. "It gave us a real lift, but we haven’t done anything yet, and we still need to go to Walsall on Saturday and get another win, which we are more than capable of doing.

"But it’s not over yet. Mathematically we’re not safe and we’ve still got to go to Walsall and look for the win.

"The players are full of confidence now, and if they’re not then they should be. Hopefully the fans are optimistic now as well."

Wrexham left it late in the final derby at Gay Meadow before the Shrews move to a new ground on the outskirts of the town next season. But the only goal of the game – in the 79th minute from on-loan Michael Proctor – saw the Dragons pick up a crucial victory, their third on the bounce.

With Bristol Rovers beating relegation-threatened Macclesfield at the same time, Wrexham moved up to 20th in the League Two table and know a win on Saturday over Walsall could be enough to see them safe. And playing away on Saturday could be a bit of an advantage as the Dragons have performed well against the top sides on their travels.

After victories over Bristol Rovers, Lincoln City and now Shrewsbury – all sides pressing for at least the play-offs – Wrexham are in confident mood going to the Bescot Stadium.

Williams added: "Playing away seems to suit us, we can let teams come onto us and then counter quickly on the break. Robbo (Neil Roberts) holds the ball up well and we’ve got Michael Proctor and Chris Llewellyn making runs. We are dangerous.

"I know we didn’t create a lot of chances on Tuesday, but we only needed that one chance and we put it away.

"As the game wears on you do start to think it might not come because there wasn’t a lot of chances in the game. They were a threat, which they are always going to be with the pace of (Derek) Asamoah and people bombing on. It’s hard work, but we showed well and we got the goal.

"I think we deserved it in the end, because we stuck at it and did the job."
