A NEWI graduate has scooped an award for a media invention.

Liz Edwards, of Bersham, was awarded the Skillset Best Newcomer Interactive Media Award at this year's Cardiff Screen Festival.

Liz, who graduated in 2004 with a first-class honours degree in Multimedia Design, took the title for a project called Pi.

The device acts like a visual roladex and can be used to transfer work between digital devices, such as mobile phones, PCs and digital cameras.

The 34-year-old was shortlisted with another candidate for the award and was invited to attend the festival for the awards presentation.

She said she was thrilled to win the award, which includes £1,000 towards further training and development.

'I love what I do so it is great to get an award for doing something I enjoy.

'It is such an exciting time, there is so much happening in the multimedia industry at the moment, especially in North Wales, and I am just enjoying being part of it.'

Liz is no stranger to success - during the summer she attended the internationally renowned Design and Art Direction Design and Advertising awards, which took place in London and was commended for a web design project she undertook.

Since graduating Liz, along with three of her fellow graduates, set up a limited company called 'and' multimedia and graphic design.

The company, based in Wrexham's NEWI Innovation Centre, offers a broad range of services from website design to DVDs and has already carried out work for a number of clients, including North Wales Police Eastern Division.

Liz now hopes the award will help her and the business.

She plans to use her training fund to strengthen her technical skills and help bring her design ideas to life, and for business training to help with the day to day running of the company.
