A MAN living at the Elworth Bail Hostel was electrocuted after he fell on to overhead power cables at Sandbach Station.

The 48-year-old man, who has not been named but is understood to have come from the Warrington area, fell on to the roof of a train and then plunged on to the station platform. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inspector Sefton Sadio, of British Transport Police, said: 'The man started to climb up on to the overhead stanchion. There were two witnesses who saw him doing it.

'He took one step too far, fell on to the 25,000 volt overhead cables, then on top of a train and from the top of the train on to the platform.

'Despite the best efforts of the people nearby who tried to help him he was certified dead by paramedics.'

The incident happened at approximately 6.50pm on Monday. Just 20 minutes earlier the man had been seen shopping in the village.

Marie Orrell, of Cheshire Probation Service, said: 'We can confirm the man was a resident at the Linden Bank Bail Hostel and had been remanded there on bail since mid June.'

She added: We extend our sympathy to his family at this very sad time.'
