A MAN who has been sleeping rough in a park is pleading with council chiefs to provide him with a home in Ellesmere Port.

Graham Riley, 45, who had been living in Elton up until earlier this month when his home was repossessed, says he is willing to stay anywhere in the town.

He has been sleeping in Festival Park, having earlier spent a couple of nights at Stoak Lodge homeless hostel.

Mr Riley, who is not currently working due to stress, claims there are empty flats in Sutton Way and Stanney where he could be housed.

He said: “I’ve never been in this situation before and I don’t know how the system works.

“I’ll take anything from the council. I just need somewhere for my stuff and to get my head down.”

Rob Selby, director of housing and development services at the borough council, said Mr Riley was assisted with emergency accommodation over a weekend period.

The following week arrangements had been made to find him alternative accommodation outside of the borough, which he chose not to take up.

Mr Selby said: “He has a number of options that have been explained to him by council officers but he does not want to pursue these at the present time.

“We will continue to offer advice and assistance but it is for him to decide whether to accept it.”
