DEFENDER Andy Holt cleaned up at the Wrexham Player of the Season awards yesterday, which for the first time was attended by all the main branches of the club's supporters' groups.

Organised by Wrexham Supporters Trust, the event attracted an audience of more than 150, which saw the popular wing-back collect trophies and bottles of champagne from the Trust, Wrexham official supporters association, the Shropshire Reds, Holywell and District Reds and the London Reds.

Wrexham's Wales under-21 midfielder Mark Jones was another winner, taking the supporters' association young player of the year award and there was a special trophy - the unsung hero award - for club secretary Geraint Parry.

Accepting the last of his many prizes Holt joked: "I'm a bit disappointed not to have taken the extra-mile award."

That had earlier been presented by the Trust to two Wrexham fans who staged a charity walk from Wrexham to Cardiff prior to the club's appearance in the LDV Vans Trophy final at the Millennium Stadium.

Reflecting on a troubled season off and on the pitch, Shropshire Reds chairman John Humphreys said members of the Trust had worked tirelessly to try and safeguard the future of the club.

But he added: "Wrexham are the fourth-worst supported team in League One and, given the help the club has had from the wider football community this season, there are a lot of people who need to take a hard look at their contribution to the club.

"When the dust settles on the current takeover talks, things will have to change and we in the Shrophire Reds will do as much as we can to ensure that we encourage more people to support the club."
